Trick or treat!
Thoroughly recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni if you haven't watched it already. One of my favorites ever and I'm not even a horror person. The visual novel Saya no Uta, too, since that's a little less well-known.

If you've played this game before, you'll understand.
I was ridiculously terrified of our dorm building elevator for a week once because the lights inside were broken and they had padded the walls for moving out for break /o\ I LIVED ON THE SIXTH FLOOR.

What horror things do I even know that you don't, sob? Umm... Umineko and Higurashi are both horror visual novels. Those count, right?

For the record, since I've been reading through comments to make sure I didn't repeat myself, there actually is a Mac patch for Umineko, and the one for ep 1-4 at least definitely runs on Macs running 10.5. I'm awful with horror, though, I'm stupidly jumpy about all of it—
here is a cat in an aviator costume though. trick or treat!

Trick or treat! Slightly graphic so linking it and warning for blood: one can never go wrong with Higurashi no Naku Koro ni on Halloween.
